In the footsteps of Edvard Munch - Åsgårdstrand
Edvard Munch’s strongest bond with Åsgårdstrand developed in the period between 1889 and 1905. He would stay in his little cottage for months at a time every year: «Here, I have painted for more than 30 years, my best pictures as well as studies for the Frieze of Life».
Åsgårdstrand had a redemptive role for Munch as an artist and a painter of the psyche of modern humanity. The landscape became a recurring theme in his art: the curving shoreline and the full moon’s golden pillar over the fjord.
After an hour's bus ride, we arrive at Munch's Café in Åsgårdstrand. Here we take a break with coffee and "krabbelure" - Munch’s favorite pastry. We follow in Munch's footsteps and get to experience the places he painted “The Girls on the Bridge”, “Four Girls in Åsgårdstrand”, “Inger on the Beach”, “The Dance of Life”, “Melancholy”. Then we visit Munch's House, his first home of his own, and also the only preserved, intact home of the world artist. A visit here is touching - we get closer to Edvard Munch than anywhere else!
After lunch we will return to Oslo for a guided tour of Munch’s «Freia Frieze», at the Freia Chocolate factory. All twelve paintings represent the daily life in Åsgårdstrand.
The main tour as described above is the longest and can be tailored to the number of hours or price that is desirable for your group. These tours are reserved for pre-booked tours for small and medium-sized groups.
