In the footsteps of Edvard Munch - Jeløya/Moss

Edvard Munch rented the imposing Grimsrød Manor on the island of Jeløy, close to Moss, from 1913 to 1916. He was by then an acclaimed artist with considerable sales and financially well situated. Munch had already several homes around the Oslo fjord, at Åsgårdstrand, Kragerø and Hvitsten. At Grimsrød Manor he got enough space to continue the work on his extensive frieze for the Assembly Hall, Aula, at the University of Oslo. He concentrated on the third of these motives, Alma Mater. Munch also spent much time on his experiments with printmaking, and he painted several portraits of influential German friends and collectors.

We will follow in the footsteps of Edvard Munch entering the traditional and characteristic cultural Jeløy landscape  - a "manor house landscape," with rich, rolling fields broken by stone walls and tree-lined lanes.  After a coffee break and visit at Alby farm and the Art Gallery F15, we will have a lecture about Munch’s life and art at Jeløy and Moss.

After lunch we are heading to Grimsrød Manor and walking in the footsteps of Edvard Munch:  every day he walked down the avenue from Grimsrød to Moss railway station where he bought the daily newspapers and emptied his large post office box.  After this short walk we return to Oslo.
